I Got My Smell & Taste Back After 3 Days Being COVID Positive: Here’s How

Let’s face it: being unable to smell and taste anything sucks. Back in December, I found out that I’d tested positive for COVID-19 on a Friday afternoon and lost my smell & taste by Saturday evening. As a health coach, I knew I had to do everything in my power to make sure that I got my senses back as quickly as possible.

These are the four practices I used to get myself smelling and tasting food again by the following Wednesday afternoon. And while I can’t guarantee that they’ll work for you, I’m positive that they will do more help than harm.

  1. I took my vitamins.

The Institute for Functional Medicine recommends vitamins D3 and C to help your body combat against infections such as COVID-19. They can help your body produce a stronger immune response. Other minerals such as zinc can help reduce the severity of viral infections, too.

  1. I prioritized anti-inflammatory foods.

Just because I couldn’t taste anything didn’t mean I was going to skimp on nutrition. I loaded up my morning fauxtmeal bowls with a few teaspoons each of ginger and turmeric, which are both powerful antioxidant compounds. The curcumin in turmeric can also help prevent the virus from replicating.

I also made sure to incorporate plenty of colorful vegetables and grass-fed beef into my meals that weekend to get as big a nutritional punch as I could.

  1. I smell-trained.

As soon as I tested positive, I immediately went over to my bookshelf and smelled a super strong pumpkin-spice candle that I keep out year round. I could still smell it then. Over the next few days, I frequently returned to the candle to track how my sense of smell progressed.

On Saturday and Sunday, it smelled like an unscented tea candle. But by Monday, I could smell faint notes of fall. On Wednesday, it was back full force.

  1. I rewired my brain.

I truly believe that brain rewiring was key for me in regaining my senses so quickly. By using a combination of visualizations, strong emotions, and consistency, I trained my brain to be able to smell and taste again. And the coolest part is that you can use brain rewiring to overcome so many other negative thinking pathways and limiting beliefs.

When you take care of your body, it will take care of you in return.
